ROMS was founded in 2019 in Tokyo with the vision to help retailers create new customer experiences with digital technology and automation. In Japan, the industry faces structural problems such as labor shortage (a side effect of an aging society), as well as increased competition from ecommerce and new consumer preferences to shop online or via mobile apps. In other countries, retailers have responded to similar challenges by building large-scale automated facilities (micro-fulfillment centers) on-site. This approach however, is not feasible for Japanese retailers with less store space and load limits.
This is why ROMS decided to develop smaller-scale solutions – RCS (robotics convenience stores) and NFC (nano-fulfillment centers) – that utilize automated warehouse and autonomous store technologies to solve these problems on the supply side. We also develop mobile apps, UI/UX designs and systems to stimulate consumer demand. We strive to bring together the best of the digital and physical worlds to create a new shopping experience, and help the transformation of the retail industry.

Our solution is a vertical one that caters to retailers’ specific needs. By applying automated warehouse technology (which until now has been a BtoB solution) for BtoCs and integrating robotics and software, we believe we can help retailers create new customer experiences that merge the online with the offline.
